Clothes For Your Skate Date
If you’re like me, over quarantine you’ve seen your friends, family, and social media favorites take up new and different hobbies. As life opens back up, there’s no shortage of these lingering aspirations to start new hobbies. People are continuing to find new passions everyday, and I have to say, one of the most visible trends that has taken off in the past year is skating! But not just any skating, I’m talking roller and inline skating. And how could you not be inspired with so many groovy TikToks and Instagram reels of baddies rolling around doing creative tricks and, most importantly, having a blast? I myself have formed a gal-gang of skaters. All levels assemble and come together at a designated spot (must be smooth or freshly paved) and skate around to music. And I have to say it’s one of my most favorite and unexpected things to come out of this year. So let’s take a look at some clothes we have here at 2nd Street that should be and could be your go-to skate pieces.
An essential clothing item to have while skating around is a comfy pair of lightweight shorts — a bonus if they are bright. Since it’s now Spring and starting to warm up, it’s nice to have a little leg exposed while you skate around. However, you want to make sure you’re wearing your knee pads for those inevitable falls we all eventually take. You’ll be thankful to feel the breeze and a lot less sweaty at the end of the day. The grey pair are vintage cotton with a quilted midsection for flair, going for only twelve dollars. The tie dyed shorts are by Los Angeles locals Camp High Collective. You’ll be living high just like Toro y Moi in these classic cotton shorts as you roll around on a sunny afternoon.
Next up, while it can be a little extra, it does help if you want to skate at night or if you happen to skate streets with high traffic. Reflective material will signal to on coming traffic that you are there and will draw attention to all the cool moves you’ll be throwing down. If it hasn’t warmed up quite enough for shorts where you live maybe these I.Am.Gia motorcycle joggers will be for you. Surprisingly lightweight, they give you the cover you need and will reflect like the sun hitting the snow. Plus theres a little extra material that could double for padding in the knee if you fall. All jokes aside the reflective workers vest could be fashion if you know how to wear it. Pair it with some cute dolphin shorts and a LuLu Lemon sports bra, and this vest becomes a look. No one will miss you bumping and grinding in this vest as you skate the night away.
I always have a hard time choosing what type of top I want to wear for skating. Normally, I go skating after work when it’s cooling down, so it’s tough to decide whether to wear long sleeves. or not. This mesh long sleeve with a hoodie is a perfect compromise: arm coverage, so you won’t get cold but also room to breath with the mesh material. While it’s purely aesthetic, the fact that the shirt has a hood is amazing. Let this Forever21 long sleeve mesh hoodie come home with you and I’m sure you’ll find a million uses for it. For those hot days we have a vintage muscle tank band tee for an 80’s blues band. No one will understand the reference and that’s ok — the irony won’t be lost on your wearing an 80’s style shirt while skating, and that’s all that matters.
Even when skating, it’s important never to forget the accessories. The fanny pack is key to being able to access necessities quickly. With everything around your waist, you’re able to glide handsfree. Let’s say you’re the designated DJ at your friend’s skate session. Now, whenever the song is not getting the people going, instead of having to skate back to the car, search for your phone in the cup holder, and change the song, you can just reach inside your fanny pack and queue up another song.
Stash your joints, chapstick, sunscreen, whatever you need — you’ll be prepared with your sparkly fanny pack. Let’s talk sun protection! Even if you’re wearing sunscreen on those warmer spring days, it can be pretty bright. Having some shade for your face could be a benefit. This Cuban style thatched wicker hat can provide such shade and comfort. It also provides color and joy.

Now that we have shown you some of the skate clothes we have to offer, what are you waiting for? Go out there grab any kind of skates — roller or inline, it doesn’t matter, just get out there and get skating with your friends! You won’t regret it.
